The Marmalade Pantry

Finally, my exams are over!!! But strangely, i dont feel very liberated after my last paper. Maybe it's because i felt that i didnt do very well this semester. Maybe because my freedom only lasts for one week before i have to start mugging my ass off again next week. Nevertheless, at least i get my well-deserved break, albeit a very short one.

Met up with Jiang for dinner at The Marmalade Pantry!
ribeye steak sandwich with grilled onions avocado & wasabi mayonnaiseoooh, my favorite sandwich ever! The steak was succulent and the wasabi mayonnaise added a whole new dimension to the flavor...omg, it was simply delicious beyond wordsseared foie gras on apple prune brioche apple & rhubarb crumblehomemade lemon tart with wild berries & raspberry coulisAt first sight, i was wondering, i seem to have seen this before somewhere. Then it struck me. I had the almost exact same thing at Pierside Kitchen & Bar(which happens to be under the Marmalade group too) on my birthday 2 years ago! But well, i forgot how it tasted like, and this was certainly worth every cent.
But i was so full after my gigantic sandwich that i couldnt finish my lovely lemon tart :(

I've discovered a perfect place for my morning run! The air is fresh, the streets are quiet, there's a slight breeze and a nice view...and most important of all,it makes the once torturous routine so much more enjoyable!

April 21, 2007

This has got to be the worst day of my life, i swear i had never been so frantic before in my life. Haha if you are bored enough, then read on to see what happened to me.

First, after my econs paper, i went YIH for lunch. Wanted to have subway, but the queue was disgustingly long. Seriously, i haven seen such long and terrible queue at subway except for the 10cents sandwich day. And it's not just Subway, everywhere else was packed. So in the end i had to make do with tuna sandwich from Cheers which tasted worse than shit.

Secondly, i had about an hour before my next paper but all the study rooms were full and i couldnt even find a proper place to sit down and read my notes. And i was so super tired after my first paper(the chicken essence inthe morning obviously didnt help). After much grumbling and emitting the most no. of vulgarities per minute in my life, i finally found a nice little sofa. I was very tired and decided to take a nap(studies showed that a 20min nap enhances concentration and productivity).

And when i was taking out my phone from my bag, i realised that my bottle leaked and all my stuff were wet. I wanted to curse, but decided i had sweared enough in a day. Thank god my notes were not in my bag.

Just when i was about to doze off, my phone's alarm rang, signaling the end of my nap time. And i had to rush down for the exam. But i was still very tired so i decided to buy some coffee (first time i bought coffee to perk myself up!).BAD IDEA. I was delayed while buying the coffee and that means i had greater trouble later!

By the time i rushed down to MPSH, it was terribly crowded and i had to squeeze my way through to my exam venue. I guess i was still blur cos i couldnt find MPSH5! I thought it was on the second floor and to my horror, i couldnt find it! By that time, everyone was already entering the halls. I was so scared i couldnt find the place in time, i called Jiang and cried! (yar, so silly of me)

But luckily, i remembered that i had a school map in my bag, despite it being torn and tattered from the water that leaked from my bag, and managed to find the hall in the end. I was so stupid, it was on the first floor instead of second! Phew, at least i managed to get there in time. If i havent made it, i 'd probably just go to the busiest roads and let the cars run over me a million times.

I know it’s the exam period now so it is inevitable that everyone is feeling stressed and burning midnight oil. BUT DON’T!

I’d tell you why.

Firstly, the influence of hormones on hippocampal function, particularly those secreted as a consequence of activation of the hypothalamo-pituitary-adrenal axis (HPA) mainly as a response to stress, has been acknowledged for several decades. The hippocampus has the highest concentration of corticosterone receptors in the brain , and the profound effects of stress on hippocampal function, and in particular on learning and memory processes, have been attributed to this. An interesting, and perhaps predictable, finding is that stress levels of glucocorticoids have a profound inhibitory effect on hippocampal cell activity , while low levels of glucocorticoids enhance activity, and this pattern is repeated with respect to glucocorticoid levels and LTP. Therefore, high concentrations of circulating glucocorticoids, consistent with marked stress, inhibited LTP while low concentrations of glucocortocoids enhanced LTP.

To cut the long story short, the bottom-line is that stress has a negative impact on your ability to store information. So, go running or eat as much as you want (you can burn off those fats later), just don’t be too stressed!

Secondly, and I cant emphasize enough, sleep is important for memory consolidation! Despite the well-known fact that sleep is extremely important for one’s mental and physical well-being, many people continue to sacrifice their precious sleep. If you think that an hour more of mugging and less of sleeping is going to get you a better grade, THINK AGAIN.

If you are tired, nothing you read is going to be encoded in your brain as sleep deprivation can impair later memory for recently acquired declarative and procedural memory. Moreover, REM sleep, when most dreaming occurs, has been shown in a number of studies to be important in consolidating procedural (skill) learning, while non-REM (slow-wave) sleep seems to be more important for declarative (knowledge-based) learning. A new study using brief daytime napping confirms the role of non-REM sleep for declarative learning. Volunteers who memorized pairs of words and practiced tracing images in a mirror test scored 15% better in the word test if they had been allowed a nap in the six hour period before being tested.

According to some psychologist called Walker "When you're asleep, it seems as though you are shifting memory to more efficient storage regions within the brain. Consequently, when you awaken, memory tasks can be performed both more quickly and accurately and with less stress and anxiety."

I know it is easier said than done, but try. I am one perfect example of a person who insists on sleeping early and sleeping enough, and my grades aint too bad, right?

All that I mentioned are not gibberish that I came up with but theories proposed by psychologists who had conducted intensive research in this field. Trust me, if you relax a bit and sleep more, your grades will suffer less!

(pardon for being so naggy, im trying to recall what I just studied heh)

Seriously, sometimes i wish im not such a perfectionist, that i wouldnt be so competitive and want to be the best in everything. I cant have the world, neither do i deserve it. Maybe i should learn to be contented with what i have and stop asking for too much.

Perhaps, then, i would be a much happier person.

Ching Cheng is grumpy. Ching Cheng cant wait for exams to end (even though she only have one week break before she has to start mugging again). Ching Cheng wants to go out with Jiang. Ching Cheng doesnt miss shopping. Ching Cheng misses fine dining more. Ching Cheng wants to eat yummy food everyday. Ching Cheng doesnt care if she gets fat since starving and running make no difference anyway. Ching Cheng wants to go on a holiday. Ching Cheng hates to travel to school. Ching Cheng wants to drive.Ching Cheng misses her best pals. Ching Cheng wants a social life.

Mugging is so boring. Ching Cheng just wants to eat, maybe that will make studying a whole lot better. Even normal food like chicken rice, long john silver, mushroom swiss, hokkein mee etc will make her very happy.

3 more weeks! *sigh*
